Using a modern browser in the Windows Sandbox
5 February 2021
As of February 2012 the Windows Sandbox feature still comes with the original Microsoft Edge browser which is not longer updated.
Installing a more modern browser is possible, but you have to do every time you start up the Sandbox.
Here's way to get around this.
- Get a modern portable browser and place it in a directory on your host machine
- Create a MappedFolder in your wsb file pointing to the directory where the portable browser is located, make sure it is readonly.
- Create a batch file and a Windows lnk and place it into the portable browser directory.
- Create a LogonCommand in your wsb file that copies the browser files and a link file to the sandbox.
Now after you start up the Sandbox after a short while a browser icon will appear on the desktop, click it and browse away.
